Patio Cover: Beat the Heat

At this time of year in the Cowichan Valley and throughout Vancouver Island, you may find the summer temperatures a little too warm.  If your patio or deck area get a lot of sun, a patio cover is a good way to get some shade and reduce the heat coming into your home.

Patio Cover / Awning: Slope Needed

Aluminum awnings and patio covers need slope for drainage - usually you will want to have about 1/4" slope per foot of projection.  This allows your patio cover to have proper drainage. Slope of a patio cover can also be adjusted for a larger slope if you are following your roofline, for example. The awning hanger hinges to allow for the greater slope if needed.

Reducing Heat in Your Home: Awnings

It's the time of year where our homes can really start to heat up.  Not only inside, but outside on our patios and decks.  

One solution to is to have an awning installed that will reduce the heat and glare coming into your home.  It will also give you an outdoor covered area to get some relief from the heat!

Making Your Deck or Patio More Usable

A family of four was wishing they could use their deck more often, even in the rain. They suggested it would also be nice to have some shelter from the sun or shade, and be able to sit out on their deck on a hot summer day.  Additionally, they wanted to be sure their home was not too dark with a patio cover just outside their sliding glass doors.

An aluminum awning with a mixture of aluminum pans and skylights was the perfect answer.  The awning skylights provided enough light, and the aluminum pans stopped the sun from scorching the back deck on a hot summer day.

Awning Skylights - What are they made of?

You have several options for your awning, one of them being 'all aluminum' panels, without any skylights.  Many people choose to have some skylights in their awning to let in some light.  Some people want their awning to be 'all skylights' to let in the most light over their deck. 

What are the skylights made of?  The product we use is called lexan thermoclear.  It is an extremely durable twin walled polycarbonate that is 250 times stronger than glass, offering superior durability and strength.
